The match kicked off on schedule and from the get go, it was going to be a very physical match. SMU came out very intense on making a point. About 2 minutes in the match, SMU scored the first Try of the match and was head strong on being the first team to beat UT Dallas. Roughly 8 minutes later it was UT Dallas that got on the board with an excellent kick to the wing Justin Thompson who collected the ball and ran away from SMU to dot the Try down close to the posts. The conversion made UT Dallas had the lead 7 to 5. Later in the half Vince Dutton broke into the second level of SMU's defense when he grubber kicked his way into goal and was able to beat the defenders to ground the second Try of the half. The conversion was missed but the half ended UT Dallas 12, SMU 5.
The second half began like the first half was played, hard and physical, but early in this half Marc Hudac broke away to score what would be a go ahead Try, but Marc ran out of goal before grounding it. Darn, shades of Cameron a few years ago. Marc would make things right by scoring his Try a few minutes later. UT Dallas was issued a penalty against SMU deep in SMU territory, when UT Dallas went for points. Vince made the penalty kick to give us 20 points for the game.
SMU made a run and we missed a number of tackles and SMU scored 14 points in this half to bring the end of the match UT Dallas 20, SMU 19.
SMU was another good test for us in terms of size, speed and the will to want to win.
Next week, both the Men and Women travel to Whicita Falls to play Midwestern State. The women will play a newly developed women's side at MSU and the men will take on an always tough men's side.
Details will be posted later as I get them, this will be both sides final match of the 2013-2014 season, and while the men will continue on to the state playoff/championship and the women will continue to meet to work on next season. More on both after the season is completed.
