Guest referee, Randy Campbell showed after having done a division one match earlier in the day to save me from walking around the pitch in an attempt to referee the match. The match began approx. 7:10 pm with both sids playing quite well together, tackleing, rucking and mauling all was hotly contested by both sides. They played with the same intensity they've played with all season long, but the greatest improvement I saw, was they all knew what they had to do. To compare what the lads look like now as to what they looked like last October - they are a rugby team.
Not really concerned with who scored or any score at all, we just wanted the opportunity to run around the pitch with jerseys on and hit someone with another jersey. To name a few players that stood out in my mind and not playing favorite to one side or the other. Of course strong running and tackling by Nathan, Dominic, Cameron, Vince, Hale, Zach will help lead us in Nebraska. But the showing of other players who stepped up their games Anthony Paradowski, Ben Bales and John Bradshaw had multiple opportunities to carry the ball and made some good advancement while protecting possession. Sean Harris did the same (except one time he did revert back to his old self by running sideways), Marc and Alejandro played as well as I have seen them play. Both Full Backs Steven Shaffer and Ross Chan (who had been sick all week) showed great poise in playing the position. Stephen Boedins, Brandon Miller, Chad McDonald both showed a lot more of their skills.
Here I'm going to separate the backs and pretty boys from the rest, these forwards all showed me a whole lot more of what they've learned all season long. Props - Jonathan Holmes, Justin Didier, Nick Walker, Erbold. Hookers Scott Fahle and filling in Alex Chi (normally a prop). Locks Chris Park (normally a Hooker) Jimmy Chi all played extremy well together. It was really exciting and fun watching them grow on the rugby pitch as they have this year and see them taking care of business.
Basically UTD won the match 25 to the Hordes 20 in a very good and entertaining match. I know this because while our match was going on, a number of parents whose daughters were playing soccer on the next field, stopped watching the soccer to watch our rugby match - YES that's real entertainment.
