On a cold Saturday afternoon, Sam Houston State Women showed up in force (11 players) to our 6 and finally 7th player.
The Line up.
1. Lorraine, 2. Cora, 3. Vic, 4. Alyssa, 5. Rachel, 6. Mel, 7. Yesina
While I personally didn't want the game to go on, but all of the girls wanted to play, and because of that I allowed the games to proceed. Normally, clubs would play the best of three 15 minute matches, but it was decided that we would play one 20 minute match, winner take all.
The match began with both clubs searching for some kind of footing to make a move against each other, It was a very well played match, with Sam Houston taking an early lead in the first half, but in the second half, our ladies came alive with Alyssa scoring 2 trys to make it a game.
Women of the Match - Alyssa Gelman
In all, our ladies have had a great season, growing into adults who have all made several commitments to attend class, some work and those that want to learn how to play rugby, came out to every practice and every game.
Thank you to those ladies and I'm looking forward to next year, working with you all and learning from you.
The players from Angelo State showed up at the same time as the Sam Houston Women and when the women's match was over, the men took the field. ASU was expecting a few more players but due to weather conditions in San Angelo a good number of their players couldn't make it. So they took the field with 13 players. Meanwhile, UT Dallas wasn't very much better, seeing that it was a home match for us, but we did have 15 players. So we played 14 against 13 and we had 1 reserve.
The line up:
1. Brandon, 2. Daniel, 3. Jonathan, 4. Precious, 5. Manny, 6. Luke, 7. Eric, 8. Jake, 9. Nick Pebworth, 10. Andrew Whiteis, 11. Kashan, 12. Nicky DiCarlo, 13. Liam, 14. Jordan
Reserve: Josh who later came in for Luke.
The match was played same way the ladies match went, looking for footing, but it was a little easier, because the women had already broken up a lot of the ice on the field.
UT Dallas struck first with Nicky DiCarlo intercepting a ASU pass and running it back to score the first try of the day. Then ASU came back to battle up and down the field. They played a 8 man game, considering they had 2 very large props both weighting in about 300 plus pounds. And 3 other players that had to weight about 275, which gave us fits every time one of those players got the ball, but we battled.
During this half, we managed to march the ball down the pitch, with some steady and deliberate rucking to put up another score. Jonathan was the one that punched in our second try of the day, with Nick Pebworth converting. The end of the first half UT Dallas 12, ASU 24.
The end of the first half would mark the end of the game, an officer from the Richardson ISD Security Dept. came by and ordered us off the field, like UT Dallas that field was closed, but we didn't know that info. So both clubs joined the ladies at Fuzzy's Taco Shop for some warm food and cold drink.
Man of the Match - Nicky DiCarlo
