2012 UT Dallas Awards Dinner

5/14/2012

Well here we are the actual end of our first season, we went undefeated, we won the Texas Rugby Union Division III Championship, we show cased our talent at the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) national playoffs in Wayne, Nebraska.  Not a bad run for a first year club, that was looking to only be competitive.
It's been a great year, the lads learned so much and performed so much better than anyone expected.  At the end of the year Awards dinner, along with some of the usual gag awards we handed out.  There were some serious awards that begins the tradition that I hope lasts for many years.
Some of the gag awards that were handed out were:
Think Before You Talk - Erbold Uran
Run Strait - Sean Harris (again)
Glutton for Purnishment - Steven Shaffer
All State Good Hands - Dominic Prestia
Brain Fart - Luke Taran
The first of many serious awards that were handed out were: Note all of these awards were voted on by the members of the UT Dallas Rugby Football Club.
Rookie of the Year - Forwards - Ben Bales
Rookie of the Year - Backs - Cameron Broussard
Most Valuable Forward (Tie) Sean Harris and Anthony (AJ) Paradowski
Most Valuable Back - Nathan Sohadaseni
Most Inspirational - Steven Hale

Some of the parents we'd like to thank for all of their support, David Shaffer, Heather and John Bradshaw, Christine and Dominic Prestia, Anita Didier and Diane and Walter Taran.  Thank you for everything you've done for this club.
The last person I'd like to thank wasn't able to attend the dinner, but without his help and support this club wouldn't have been the club we became.  Thank you Chris McAlpine, your tireless effort and work made this club what it is today.
As a whole, I'd like to thank every member of the University of Texas Rugby Football Club, while I only developed the practice sessions, you ran them and learned from them.  While I made up the rosters for each match, you took what you learned from practice and applied them on the field when it counted.  There were many times you could have packed it in and walked away, but you didn't and it showed.  You guys never gave up, you played the game the way it's supposed to be played, with courage, dignity, respect for your team, respect for your opponents and the game itself.  THANK YOU
I will post the web site for Kayli Lopez so anyone wanting to purchase pictures she took in Nebraska will be able to contact her and order for yourself.
Kayli, if you see this, I didn't mean to omit you but thank you for traveling with us to Nebraska it meant a lot to us to have you along and the photos you took are great.  I realize we kind of threw you into a group where you didn't know anyone, but you adapted quite well and I hope you enjoyed yourself with us as much as we enjoyed having you along with us.

The last event for 2012 - UT Dallas Awards Banquet & Next Years Schedule

5/8/2012

It's almost here, the end of a fantastic year, our first end of the year Awards Banquet.  I know we had an Awards Banquet last fall, but that was to hand out some gag awards, get together as a team, parents and fans.
This is the real thing, yes we still plan on having some gag awards, like the worst hands, bone head and other light hearted awards, but there will be serious awards handed out this coming Saturday.
It's been a lot of fun and we hope to continue the fun this Saturday evening.  The Awards Banquet will be at:

      Sonny Bryan's Barbeque: 1251 W Campbell Rd Ste 240, Richardson, TX 75080
From 3:30pm to 5:30pm - The Mustang Room

Some info for everyone attending, if everyone places their orders before coming into the Mustang Room might make things move a little smoother.  That way the only time you would have to leave would be to get your meal when your name is called.
Also I'll have some stats from this past season for anyone interested.
Our schedule for the 2012-2013 season is posted in the schedule & standings, the kick off times need to be worked out, but as I get those ironed out and any friendly matches we get will be posted.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the Awards Dinner and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

UT Dallas Rugby still nationally ranked and more

5/1/2012

Stephen Cohen (President of NSCRO) has come out with his end of the year rankings of the top 25 and yes your lads are still ranked 16th.  I've posted the entire list in the section National Small College Rankings (see the section at the top listed as more...).
We're a little more than a week away from our big end of the year Awards/Banquet.  Like the fall awards/banquet it will be held at Sonny Bryan's Bar-B-Que.  The address is listed in the Schedule & Standings section of this website.  The time for the awards/banquet has been changed just a bit to accomodate us and Sonny Bryan's.  The awards/banquet will be from 3:30 to 5:30, May 12th.
I hope that everyone will be able to attend, we'll have a few gag awards, plus the serious awards and I know all the players will be in attendance, it should be a lot of fun considering everything we've gone through this past season.
On another note, some of the lads have expressed an interest in competing in some 7's tournaments this coming summer.
7's is slightly different than the kind of rugby you've watched this past season.  Meaning they play on the same size field, except there are only 7 players on the field for each team.  If played correctly, 7's can be more like a track meet, because there is so much running.  This also is the rugby that will be re-introduced in the upcoming Olympics, one other note: The USA is currently the defending Gold Medal Champion in Rugby having defeated France in the last Olympics this sport was played (1924, Paris Olympics).
I'm excited about this and them because I see a lot of  potential and exciting players from this club.  More on that to come.
Thank you to everyone who helped us get to everyone match we played (in person, in spirit), everyone who brought food, water, gatoraide anything the lads needed and especially everyone who helped us get to Nebraska and those who made the trip themselves.  I only wish the weather and scores would have been a bit more favorable to us, but I'm proud of the lads accomplishment all season and Nebraska.  They never quit, they played hard and were true ambassadors of themselves, their parents, UT Dallas and the game.
