It’s not quite the middle of summer, but I felt it was time to give you all an update on the goings on.
A preliminary schedule has been posted on this web site, but waiting for it to be finalized. In the years past, the collegiate leagues within Texas had been able to put together a league schedule for the next year by the previous May, but with the serious growth, in high school, collegiate both men and women, the women’s club sides and the men’s clubs. To go along with the shrinking number of referees needed for these games, our local governing board
(the Texas Rugby Union) felt it was time for all schedules to be reviewed by this board to eliminate over crowded Saturday’s. And help ease the burden of some referees doing as many as three 80 minute matches on any given day.
The Lonestar Rugby Conference (LSC) commissioner Shayne Roberson has put together a very good preliminary schedule for the upcoming Men’s competition. Potentially, there could be 6 clubs in our Northern Conference (UT Dallas, Univ. of Dallas, SMU, Midwestern St., LeTourneau Univ., McMurray Univ.) giving us 5 home matches as well as 5 away matches all leading up to the playoffs championship.
Recruiting is going well, I think, both the guys and girls have been going out on Freshmen orientation to find new players and I have been emailing new prospects and parents for the UT Dallas Rugby Club. At one point this past
month, the girls posted that they had signed up 14 new players on 1 afternoon and I met up with a young man and his parents to talk about UT Dallas Rugby. I like this young man and feel he could make an immediate impact on the pitch and his parents will fit right in with all the great parents we have in supporting Rugby at UT Dallas.
On the UT Dallas Women’s Rugby Club front, Sharpie and I have met with one candidate, and I’ve spoken with a
couple of others. My goal is to find someone who could come in and assist Sharpie. I’m not going far away, I just feel it’s important for them to have a coach there for all the practice and not split time between the Men and
Ladies. I will still be there to evaluate and assist not only the players but the coaches as well. All things Rugby will go through me and handed down to the coaches and players.
There has been much discussion via email and will be a 3 hour phone conference call to talk about our upcoming
Women’s league and schedule. Our goal is to create our own Women’s competition (the Lonestar Women’s Rugby
Conference or LSWC). As things progress this summer and when a schedule is finally posted, I will post it for everyone to begin planning on attending our newest club. A group of ladies ready to take on anyone and have fun doing it.
